I wanted to know what it takes to build every part of a social network as one coherent application. I wrote up the build in Building a full social network from scratch.

The home feed

What it does

  • A personalised home feed (80% organic, 20% recommended) with posts, media, attachments, six reaction types, nested comments, link previews, and infinite scroll.

  • Profiles with follow and unfollow, friend requests, groups with roles and approval, pages, and real-time direct messages with attachments.

  • Search across people, groups, and pages, with "people you may know" suggestions.

  • An admin dashboard with daily, weekly, and monthly active users, engagement analytics, user management, and moderation.

  • A graph explorer for multi-hop traversal, friend-of-friend discovery, and mutual friends.

How it is built

Spring Boot and PostgreSQL for the core, React for the UI, OpenSearch for search (with a PostgreSQL fallback), and AOEE, my Rust social-graph cache, for relationship queries — with one-click backfill from PostgreSQL into the graph cache.
