How to use it

Drop an Atari picture on the page to view it. ST and STE switch how the palette words are read (STE adds a fourth bit per channel). Download PNG saves what you see at 1×; the Scale buttons only change the on-screen zoom.

Drop a PNG, JPEG, or GIF instead and the Convert panel turns it into an ST picture: pick low (320×200, 16 colours), medium (640×200, 4), or high (640×400, mono) resolution, how to fit the image, and whether to dither. The palette is chosen from the image and snapped to the 512 (or STE 4096) colours the machine can show. Save the result as Degas .PI1, Degas Elite .PC1, or NEOchrome .NEO.

The Palette helper converts between ST palette words ($0777) and RGB colours.

Format notes

  • Degas (.PI1/.PI2/.PI3): a resolution word, 16 palette words, and 32,000 bytes of screen memory (interleaved bitplanes, 16 pixels per group of words).

  • Degas Elite (.PC1/.PC2/.PC3): the resolution word has bit 15 set; each scanline of each bitplane is PackBits-compressed; 32 bytes at the end describe up to four colour-cycling ranges (shown under Details).

  • NEOchrome (.NEO): a 128-byte header (flag, resolution, palette, file name, cycling information) followed by 32,000 bytes — 32,128 in total.

  • Spectrum 512 (.SPU): 160 bytes of blank first line, 31,840 bytes of screen, and 199 × 48 palette words — three palettes per scanline, switched at fixed points as the beam moves. Compressed .SPC files are not supported yet.
