Deck and pergola planner

Joists, beams, posts and footings from the American Wood Council's DCA 6 span tables by species, grade and spacing, ledger fastener spacing, decking and guards, a framing plan, section and isometric, cut and shopping lists, build steps, and an optional pergola — a planning aid, not engineering.

How to use it

Enter the deck’s width along the house, how far it comes out, its height, and the lumber species. The tool picks the smallest joist that spans the distance at your spacing, the beam and the number of posts that carry it, checks the post height, sizes the footings, and lists every board, hanger and bag of concrete.

This is a planning aid, not an engineered design. It applies the prescriptive tables of the American Wood Council’s Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide, DCA 6-15 (the 2015 IRC version), which assume a single-level deck attached to the house, 40 psf live load and 10 psf dead load, No. 2 grade lumber in wet service, and soil bearing at least 1,500 psf. Your building department’s rules — frost depth, snow load, local amendments — come first, and an inspector checks the result.

How to use it

  • Framing — species and joist spacing pick the column of DCA 6 Table 2; the joist span L runs from the face of the ledger to the face of the beam, and the overhang past the beam is limited to the lesser of Table 2’s allowance and L/4. Beam chooses 2-ply first (then 3-ply) and adds posts until the beam span is within Table 3A for that joist span; the beam may run past its end posts by up to a quarter of its span (Figure 3).

  • Footings — Table 4 gives the maximum 6x6 post height and the footing size (round, square, thickness) for the beam span and joist span. Footings bear at least 12" below grade and below your frost depth.

  • Ledger — Table 5 spacing for ½" lag screws or through-bolts into a 2x band joist, staggered.

  • Decking — the joist spacing is checked against IRC 2021 Table R507.7 (5/4 wood 16" square to the joists or 12" at 45°; 2x wood 24" / 16"; composite per its label).

  • Guards are added when the deck is more than 30" above grade (IRC R312.1): 36" high, posts at most 6′ apart with 1,800 lb hold-downs (DCA 6).

  • Pergola — posts, two doubled beams and rafters over the deck. There is no prescriptive table for an open pergola roof, so its members are sized with the same deck tables (40 psf), which is conservative except under heavy snow; check snow load, uplift and bracing locally.

The tabs show the framing plan, a section, and an isometric (⛶ Full screen or f; Escape leaves); the cut list packs every member into 8′–20′ lengths; Shopping totals the job with your prices; Steps walks through layout, footings, posts, beam, ledger, joists, decking, guards and the pergola, each with a diagram. Print view prints all of it.

Limits

Rectangular single-level decks within DCA 6: joists at most 18′, posts at most 14′, beams from Table 3A dimension lumber (glulam beams and the hot-tub, chimney and bay-window details are not covered); stairs are planned with the stair tool. Free-standing decks are drawn with a second beam at the house. Counts of screws and hardware are estimates.
