How to use it
Choose a material (or a custom density), a shape, its dimensions, a length, and a quantity. The tool gives the weight per foot or metre, per piece, and in total, and the cost if you enter a price per pound or kilogram. Switch between inch/pound and millimetre/kilogram; entered values convert.
How it works: weight = cross-section area × length × density. Areas: round πd²/4, hex 0.866·s² (across flats), tube π/4·(D² − (D − 2t)²), angle t·(a + b − t), channel h·t + 2(b − t)·t, I-beam 2·b·tf + (h − 2tf)·tw. Shapes are treated as sharp-cornered, so rolled structural sections with root radii come out a few percent different from mill tables.
Sheet gauges lists thickness and weight per square foot and per square metre for the four common gauge systems, and finds the nearest gauge to a thickness. Gauge numbers are not the same across materials — 16 gauge steel is 0.0598″, 16 gauge aluminium is 0.0508″.
Data sources: typical published densities; gauge thicknesses from the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge (steel, galvanised), the stainless gauge table, and Brown & Sharpe (aluminium).

Sharing
Share link copies a URL that opens this tool exactly as you have it set up. It carries the material, shape, dimensions, length and cost. Opening a link replaces your own saved settings for the tool; a Restore my settings button brings them back. To write a link by hand, use shape, len, units — for example /tools/metal-weight/?shape=round&len=36&units=in.
