Box Rally

A 3D paddle game down a glowing box, seen from behind your paddle: move as you hit to put spin on the ball and bend its path, play the computer at four levels or a friend on a split screen, with curve, split and shrink power-ups. First to 11.

How to use it

You look down a long neon box from behind your paddle; the other paddle is at the far end. Hit the ball back past it. Where the ball meets your paddle sets its angle, and if your paddle is moving when it hits, the ball takes spin and bends as it flies — so a sweep to the right sends a shot that curls right, off the walls and round the other paddle. Every return is a little faster than the last. First to 11 wins; the serve changes every two points.

Play the computer at Easy, Normal, Hard or Expert. The easier ones read the ball late, guess where it will come off the walls, and don’t see spin coming; the harder ones follow the bounces and the curve, and put spin on their own shots. Or play a friend on one screen: two views side by side (stacked on a tall phone screen), each from behind its own paddle.

How to play

  • Mouse (one player) — the paddle follows the pointer. Click to serve.

  • Keyboard — one player: arrows or WASD, Space to serve. Two players: Player 1 (blue) uses WASD and Space; Player 2 (pink) uses the arrows and Enter. P or Esc pause · M sound · F full screen.

  • Touch — drag anywhere to move your paddle (your finger doesn’t have to cover it) and tap to serve. With two players each player drags and taps in their own half of the screen.

  • Gamepad — left stick or d-pad to move, A to serve, Start to pause. In a two-player game the first pad is Player 1 and the second is Player 2; with one pad, Player 2 can use the keyboard.

The ring that runs round the walls shows how far away the ball is, and the spot on the floor is right under it. Watch the ball’s colour: it takes the colour of the last paddle to hit it.

Power-ups (they can be switched off on the title screen) float in the middle of the box. Hit the ball through one and it’s yours:

  • CURVE — your next shot bends hard, even if you barely move.

  • SPLIT — a second ball. The first ball to get past someone ends the point.

  • SHRINK — the other paddle shrinks for ten seconds.

Your wins and losses against each level and your longest rally are kept in this browser. Low graphics lowers the resolution and drops the ball trails for slow devices; Shake turns screen shake off (there is less of it anyway if your system asks for reduced motion). The music is an original loop played by a small synth in the page, and it gets busier as a rally goes on.
