Coffee brewing calculator

Coffee-to-water ratios per brewing method, a recipe timer that calls out each pour with the weight the scale should read, and the extraction yield from a TDS reading, plotted on the SCA brewing control chart with brew-ratio lines.

How to use it

Brew — pick a method (pour-over, flat-bottom pour-over, Chemex, French press, AeroPress, batch brewer, espresso, cold brew) and set the coffee and the ratio; the water follows (or type the water and the coffee follows). Each method starts from a common ratio, temperature and grind.

Recipe and timer — the steps for the method with the cumulative scale weight for each pour (tare with the coffee in the brewer). Press Start as the water hits the coffee: the big clock counts up, shows the current pour and what comes next, and chimes at each step. Sound, notifications and keeping the screen on are switchable.

Extraction (TDS) — enter a refractometer reading. For pour-over and batch brew weigh the drink (or Estimate from the water, assuming the grounds keep 2 g of water per gram); for immersion the water is used; for espresso the yield. The extraction yield is plotted on the SCA brewing control chart with lines for 45–75 g of coffee per litre; the notes say which way to adjust. ⛶ Full screen shows the chart large.

Limits

  • Method ratios, temperatures, grinds and step timings are common starting points, not standards. The SCA’s Golden Cup is 55 g per litre, 1.15–1.35 % TDS and 18–22 % extraction.

  • The chart is the classic SCA (Golden Cup) chart; the SCA’s newer research (2021) found preferences spread more widely. Ratio lines assume 2 g of water kept per gram of coffee.

  • The timer needs the page open and the screen on.
