SMD packages and footprints

Chip resistor and capacitor sizes from 01005 to 2512 with power and voltage ratings, the smallest size for a given dissipation, imperial versus metric codes, and a searchable table of diode, transistor, power, SOIC/TSSOP/QFP, QFN/DFN, and BGA packages with body sizes, pitch, and how hard they are to hand-solder.

How to use it
  • Chip passives — sizes, typical thick-film resistor power ratings at 70 °C (e.g. Yageo RC series), and working voltages for 01005 to 2512, drawn to scale. Which size for this power? picks the smallest that carries twice your dissipation (and your voltage). The same digits mean different sizes in imperial and metric codes: an imperial 0603 is 1.6 × 0.8 mm, a metric 0603 is 0.6 × 0.3 mm (imperial 0201).

  • All packages — search by name, alias, pitch, or a part (qfn 0.5, sot, DO-214AC, rp2040), or filter by group. Body sizes are nominal; take footprints from the part’s datasheet or an IPC-7351 generator, because packages with the same name differ slightly between makers.

As a rough guide, 0805 and SOIC are easy with an iron, 0603 and 0.65 mm pitch are fine with flux and a fine tip, 0.5 mm pitch needs drag soldering, and leadless (QFN, DFN) and ball-grid parts need hot air or reflow. To read resistor and capacitor markings, see the resistor tool.
